I have an essay in the new issue of Writer’s Weekly about a difficult decision I made last year to turn down a writing contract for a compelling-looking science fiction anthology. To make a long story short, the publisher insisted on obtaining an unusual number of rights. I wrote about the experience because it was clear that other writers were willing to sign the contract, and because even though I knew better I toyed with the idea of agreeing to it myself. When enough people accept a new standard, it starts to become a norm. Which is why asking to be treated fairly is kind of like literary herd immunity: the more authors do it, the better it is for all of us.
